Puissances des entiers naturels • Powers of Natural Numbers

Lesson 11 Unit 1

→
3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3
35 = 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243

62 = 6 × 6 = 36

22 = 4
52 = 25
102 = 100

43 = 4 × 4 × 4 = 64

23 = 8
33 = 27
53 = 125

101 = 10
102 = 100
103 = 1000
104 = 10000
106 = 1 000 000

23 × 24 = 27
⭐ القاعدة am × an = am+n

(32)4

(2 × 5)3 = 23 × 53
⭐ القاعدة (a × b)n = an × bn

1 — Pourquoi utiliser les puissances ?

Observons le produit suivant :

5 × 5 × 5 × 5

Le facteur 5 apparaît quatre fois. On peut donc écrire plus simplement :

54

On lit : cinq puissance quatre.

35
3
Base
Le nombre que l'on multiplie plusieurs fois.
5
Exposant
→
Signification
3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3
35 = 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243

62 = 6 × 6 = 36
22 = 4
52 = 25
102 = 100

43 = 4 × 4 × 4 = 64
23 = 8
33 = 27
53 = 125
6 — Puissances de 10
101 = 10
102 = 100
103 = 1000
104 = 10000
106 = 1 000 000
7 — Produit de puissances de même base
23 × 24

Développons :

(2 × 2 × 2) × (2 × 2 × 2 × 2)

Il y a donc sept facteurs égaux à 2.

23 × 24 = 27
⭐ Règle am × an = am+n
8 — Puissance d'une puissance
(32)4
32 × 32 × 32 × 32 = 38
⭐ Règle (am)n = am×n
9 — Puissance d'un produit
(2 × 5)3 = 23 × 53
⭐ Règle (a × b)n = an × bn

1 — Why do we use powers?

Look at this multiplication:

5 × 5 × 5 × 5

The factor 5 appears four times. Instead of writing the long multiplication, we can write:

54

We read this as: five to the power of four.

⭐ Main idea A power is a short way to write repeated multiplication of the same factor.
2 — Base and exponent
35
3
Base
The number being multiplied repeatedly.
5
Exponent
The number of times the base appears as a factor.
→
Meaning
3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3
35 = 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243
3 — Write repeated multiplication as a power
7 × 7 × 7 = 73
2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 26
⚠ Be careful 26 does not mean 2 × 6.
It means:
2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2.
4 — Square of a number

When the exponent is 2, we call it the square of the number.

62 = 6 × 6 = 36
22 = 4
52 = 25
102 = 100
5 — Cube of a number

When the exponent is 3, we call it the cube of the number.

43 = 4 × 4 × 4 = 64
23 = 8
33 = 27
53 = 125
6 — Powers of 10
101 = 10
102 = 100
103 = 1000
104 = 10000
⭐ Easy rule 10n is written as 1 followed by n zeros.
106 = 1 000 000
7 — Multiplying powers with the same base
23 × 24

Expand both powers:

(2 × 2 × 2) × (2 × 2 × 2 × 2)

There are seven factors equal to 2.

23 × 24 = 27
⭐ Rule am × an = am+n
8 — Power of a power
(32)4
32 × 32 × 32 × 32 = 38
⭐ Rule (am)n = am×n
9 — Power of a product
(2 × 5)3 = 23 × 53
⭐ Rule (a × b)n = an × bn
10 — Using powers with large numbers

Powers allow us to write very large numbers in a shorter and clearer form.

5 × 106 = 5 000 000
23 × 104 = 230 000
⭐ Applications Powers are useful for large quantities such as distances, volumes, populations and numbers of cells.
