Lesson 12 Unit 2

4,5 = 4,50 = 4,500

12 = 12,0 = 12,00

1 — Qu'est-ce qu'un nombre décimal ?

Nous connaissons déjà les nombres entiers comme :

4
27
315

4,5 = 4,50 = 4,500
12 = 12,0 = 12,00

1 — What is a decimal number?

We already know whole numbers such as:

4
27
315

But sometimes a quantity is not a whole number.

For example, an object's length could be:

12.5 cm

12.5 is a decimal number.

⭐ Main idea A decimal number has a whole-number part and a decimal part separated by a decimal point.
2 — Whole-number part and decimal part
27.63

27 is the whole-number part.

63 forms the decimal part.

27
Whole-number part

3 — Place value

The position of each digit is very important.

312.064
Hundreds Tens Ones Tenths Hundredths Thousandths
3 1 2 0 6 4
⭐ After the decimal point 1st digit = tenths
2nd digit = hundredths
3rd digit = thousandths
4 — Tenths
4.7

This number contains:

4 ones + 7 tenths
0.7 = 7 / 10
5 — Hundredths
8.35

This number contains:

8 ones
3 tenths
5 hundredths
0.05 = 5 / 100
6 — Thousandths
12.408

The digit 8 represents eight thousandths.

0.008 = 8 / 1000
7 — Expanding a decimal number
53.274

We can write:

53.274
= 50 + 3 + 0.2 + 0.07 + 0.004

Or:

53 + 2/10 + 7/100 + 4/1000
8 — Zeros in decimal numbers

Adding zeros to the right of the decimal part does not change the value.

4.5 = 4.50 = 4.500
12 = 12.0 = 12.00
⚠ Be careful 5.04 is not the same as 5.4.

5.04 contains 4 hundredths.
5.4 contains 4 tenths.
9 — Decimal numbers and measurement

Decimal numbers are often used in measurements.

1 m = 100 cm

Therefore:

2.35 m = 235 cm

Similarly:

3.5 kg = 3500 g
10 — Real-world example

Suppose a mountain is:

4.825 km

Since:

1 km = 1000 m

we have:

4.825 × 1000 = 4825 m
⭐ Remember Decimal numbers allow us to express measurements more precisely than whole numbers.
