Lesson 13 Unit 2

ومقابل العدد −a هو +a.

3 ; −2 ; 4,5 ; −3 ; 1

-3;-2;1;3;4,5

1 — Pourquoi utiliser des nombres positifs et négatifs ?

Imaginons que nous mesurons la température.

+6°C

La température est au-dessus de zéro.

0°C

La température est égale à zéro.

−3°C

−5 < −2
10 — Ranger des nombres

Rangeons dans l'ordre croissant :

3 ; −2 ; 4,5 ; −3 ; 1

On obtient :

−3 < −2 < 1 < 3 < 4,5

3 ; −2 ; 4,5 ; −3 ; 1

Écris :
-3;-2;1;3;4,5

1 — Why do we need positive and negative numbers?

Imagine that we are measuring temperature.

+6°C

The temperature is above zero.

0°C

The temperature is zero.

−3°C

The temperature is below zero.

We therefore need numbers that can represent values both above and below zero.

⭐ Main idea The + sign indicates a positive number.
The − sign indicates a negative number.
2 — Positive numbers

A number preceded by + is positive.

+4
+2.5
+0.7
+18

The + sign may be omitted.

+4 = 4
+2.5 = 2.5
3 — Negative numbers

A number preceded by − is negative.

−3
−1.5
−0.25
−12
⚠ Be careful 3 and −3 are different numbers.

3 is positive.
−3 is negative.
4 — Zero
0

Zero separates negative numbers from positive numbers.

−2
−1
0
+1
+2
⭐ Remember Zero is the reference point between negative and positive numbers.
5 — The number line

Positive and negative numbers can be represented on a number line.

−4
−3
−2
−1
0
+1
+2
+3
+4
−
Negative numbers are to the left of zero.
0
Zero is the reference point.
+
Positive numbers are to the right of zero.
6 — Opposite numbers
−5     and     +5

These two numbers are the same distance from zero but on opposite sides.

They are called opposite numbers.

−3 ↔ +3
−7 ↔ +7
−2.5 ↔ +2.5
⭐ Rule The opposite of +a is −a.
The opposite of −a is +a.
7 — Distance from zero

+4 and −4 are on opposite sides of zero.

Both are four units away from zero.

−4 ← 4 units → 0 ← 4 units → +4

Therefore, they are opposite numbers.

8 — Comparing a positive and a negative number

Every positive number is greater than every negative number.

+3 > −2
0.5 > −100
9 — Comparing two negative numbers
−2 > −5

−2 is greater because it lies farther to the right on the number line.

⚠ Common mistake Do not look only at 2 and 5.

On the number line:
−5 < −2
10 — Ordering numbers

Order these numbers from smallest to largest:

3 ; −2 ; 4.5 ; −3 ; 1

The result is:

−3 < −2 < 1 < 3 < 4.5
⭐ Easy method Imagine the number line. Moving to the right means the numbers become greater.
