Decimal Fractional Numbers

Nombres fractionnaires décimaux • Decimal Fractional Numbers

Lesson 16 Unit 2

a b

10    100    1000    10000 ...

أي:

10 = 101
100 = 102
1000 = 103

37 100

100 = 10²

3,125 = 3125 1000

7 + 3 10 + 8 100

1 — Petit rappel

Un nombre fractionnaire peut s'écrire :

a b

10    100    1000    10000 ...
⭐ À retenir Les dénominateurs 10, 100, 1000, 10000... permettent une écriture décimale.
3 — Exemple
37 100

Le dénominateur est 100 et :

100 = 10²

C'est donc un nombre fractionnaire décimal.

4 — De la fraction à l'écriture décimale
43 100 = 0,43

7 10 = 0,7

38 1000 = 0,038
5 — Partie entière et partie fractionnaire
5 + 43 100 = 5,43

Nous avons 5 unités entières et 43 centièmes.

6 — Valeur des chiffres
Unités Dixièmes Centièmes
5 4 3
5,43 = 5 + 4 10 + 3 100
7 — Plusieurs écritures
5,43 = 5 + 43 100 = 543 100

3,125 = 3125 1000

7 + 3/10 + 8/100

1 — Quick reminder

A fractional number can be written:

a b

where a is the numerator and b is the denominator, with b not equal to zero.

Some fractional numbers can also be written easily using decimal notation.

2 — Decimal fractional numbers

A decimal fractional number is a fractional number that can be represented with a denominator that is a power of 10.

10    100    1000    10000 ...
⭐ Remember Denominators such as 10, 100, 1000 and 10000 allow decimal notation.
3 — Example
37 100

The denominator is 100.

100 = 10²

Therefore this is a decimal fractional number.

4 — From fraction to decimal
43 100 = 0.43

7 10 = 0.7

38 1000 = 0.038
5 — Whole part and fractional part
5 + 43 100 = 5.43

We have 5 whole units and 43 hundredths.

6 — Place value
Ones Tenths Hundredths
5 4 3
5.43 = 5 + 4 10 + 3 100
7 — Different representations
5.43 = 5 + 43 100 = 543 100

All three forms represent exactly the same number.

8 — Be careful with zeros
7 1000 = 0.007
⚠ Be careful 10 → 1 decimal place
100 → 2 decimal places
1000 → 3 decimal places
9 — From decimal to fraction
2.35 = 235 100

There are two digits after the decimal point, so the denominator is 100.

10 — Quick method
1
Count the digits after the decimal point.
2
Choose 10, 100, 1000...
3
Write the digits without the decimal point as the numerator.
3.125 = 3125 1000
