Multiplication

Multiplication des nombres entiers naturels

Lesson 2 Unit 1

a × b = b × a

13 = 10 + 3

8 × 13
= 8 × (10 + 3)
= (8 × 10) + (8 × 3)
= 80 + 24
= 104

= a × b + a × c

= a × b - a × c

6 + 4

4 × 5 = 20
6 + 20 = 26

a × b = b × a
2 — Regrouper intelligemment

8 × 13

= 8 × (10 + 3)
= (8 × 10) + (8 × 3)
= 80 + 24
= 104
⭐ Multiplication distributive sur l'addition a × (b + c)

= a × b + a × c
4 — Distributivité sur la soustraction
7 × 98

= 7 × (100 - 2)
= (7 × 100) - (7 × 2)
= 700 - 14
= 686
⭐ Règle a × (b - c)

= a × b - a × c

(5 + 3) × 4
= 8 × 4
= 32
Attention
⚠ Erreur fréquente Dans 6 + 4 × 5, ne commence pas par 6 + 4.

4 × 5 = 20
6 + 20 = 26

Multiplication of Natural Numbers

In the previous lesson, we worked with addition and subtraction. Now we will study another very important operation: multiplication.

Multiplication can replace repeated addition.

6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 4 × 6 = 24
💡 Main idea Instead of adding the same number many times, we can use multiplication.
1 — Changing the order
4 × 7 = 28

7 × 4 = 28

The order changed, but the result did not.

⭐ Important rule We can change the order of the factors without changing the product.

a × b = b × a
2 — Smart grouping

When multiplying several numbers, choose the easiest factors to multiply first.

2 × 17 × 5

= 2 × 5 × 17
= 10 × 17
= 170
1
Look at all the factors.
2
Look for factors that easily make 10 or 100.
3
Multiply those first and continue.
⭐ Remember We can change the order and grouping of factors to make multiplication easier.
3 — Distributive property
8 × 13

= 8 × (10 + 3)
= (8 × 10) + (8 × 3)
= 80 + 24
= 104
⭐ Multiplication distributes over addition a × (b + c)

= a × b + a × c
4 — Distribution over subtraction
7 × 98

= 7 × (100 - 2)
= (7 × 100) - (7 × 2)
= 700 - 14
= 686
⭐ Rule a × (b - c)

= a × b - a × c
5 — Order of operations

Without parentheses, multiplication is performed before addition or subtraction.

5 + 3 × 4

= 5 + 12
= 17

If parentheses are present, calculate inside them first.

(5 + 3) × 4
= 8 × 4
= 32
Be careful
⚠ Common mistake For 6 + 4 × 5, do not calculate 6 + 4 first.

4 × 5 = 20
6 + 20 = 26
