82 ÷ 3 donne environ 27,333... Donne une valeur approchée au dixième.
Sometimes we do not need to use every digit of a number. Instead, we can use a nearby number that is easier to read and use.
This is called an approximate value.
The symbol ≈ means “approximately equal to”.
To approximate a decimal number to the nearest whole number, look at the tenths digit.
The ones digit is 2 and the tenths digit is 8.
Since 8 is greater than or equal to 5, increase the ones digit by 1.
The tenths digit is 2. Since 2 is less than 5, the ones digit remains unchanged.
To approximate a number to one decimal place, keep one digit after the decimal point.
Then look at the second digit after the decimal point.
The second decimal digit is 6. Since it is 5 or more, the first decimal digit increases from 6 to 7.
The second decimal digit is 3. Since it is less than 5, the first decimal digit remains unchanged.
To approximate to two decimal places, keep the first two decimal digits and look at the third.
The third decimal digit is 8, so the second decimal digit increases from 7 to 8.
Example:
When approximating to one decimal place, keep 4 and look at the next digit, 7.
