Powers of Natural Numbers

Puissances des nombres entiers naturels

Lesson 3 Unit 1

34 = 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 81
⭐ تذكّر في an:

a = الأساس
n = الأس

81 = 8

251 = 25

a1 = a

70 = 1

250 = 1

1000 = 1

a0 = 1   إذا كان a ≠ 0

101 = 10

102 = 100

103 = 1000

104 = 10000

105 = 100000

am × an = am+n

3 × 4

3 × 3 × 3 × 3

34 = 81 وليس 12.

Qu'est-ce qu'une puissance ?

Considérons la multiplication :

5 × 5 × 5 × 5

Le nombre 5 apparaît quatre fois. Nous pouvons écrire plus simplement :

54

34 = 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 81
⭐ À retenir Dans an :

a = base
n = exposant
2 — Du produit à la puissance
7 × 7 × 7

Le facteur 7 apparaît trois fois.

7 × 7 × 7 = 73
1
Repère le facteur répété.
2
Compte combien de fois il apparaît.
3
Écris la base et l'exposant.
3 — Exposant 1
81 = 8

251 = 25
⭐ Règle Pour tout nombre naturel a :

a1 = a
4 — Exposant 0
70 = 1

250 = 1

1000 = 1
⭐ Règle importante Toute puissance d'un entier naturel non nul d'exposant zéro est égale à 1.

a0 = 1 pour a ≠ 0
5 — Puissances de 10
101 = 10

102 = 100

103 = 1000

104 = 10000

105 = 100000
6 — Produit de puissances de même base
23 × 24

= 27

Attention
⚠ Erreur fréquente 34 ne signifie pas 3 × 4.

34 = 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 81

What is a power?

Consider this multiplication:

5 × 5 × 5 × 5

The number 5 appears four times. Instead of writing the long multiplication, we can write:

54
💡 Main idea A power is a shorter way of writing repeated multiplication by the same factor.
1 — Base and exponent
34

3 is called the base.

4 is called the exponent. It tells us how many times the factor appears.

34 = 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 81
⭐ Remember In an:

a = base
n = exponent
2 — From multiplication to powers
7 × 7 × 7

The factor 7 appears three times.

7 × 7 × 7 = 73
1
Find the repeated factor.
2
Count how many times it appears.
3
Write the factor as the base and the count as the exponent.
3 — Exponent 1
81 = 8

251 = 25
⭐ Rule For every natural number a:

a1 = a
4 — Exponent 0
70 = 1

250 = 1

1000 = 1
⭐ Important rule Any non-zero natural number raised to the power zero equals 1.

a0 = 1 when a ≠ 0
5 — Powers of 10
101 = 10

102 = 100

103 = 1000

104 = 10000
💡 Trick For powers of 10, the exponent tells you how many zeros follow the 1.

105 = 100000
6 — Multiplying powers with the same base
23 × 24

= 27
⭐ Rule When multiplying powers with the same base, add the exponents.

am × an = am+n
Be careful
⚠ Common mistake 34 does NOT mean 3 × 4.

34 = 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 81
