Greatest Common Divisor

Plus Grand Commun Diviseur • GCD

Lesson 8 Unit 1

60 = 22 × 3 × 5

90 = 2 × 32 × 5

60 = 22 × 3 × 5

90 = 2 × 32 × 5

ق.م.أ (72 ، 48)

72 = 23 × 32

48 = 24 × 3

23 × 3 = 8 × 3 = 24
م.أ (72 ، 48) = 24

1 — Qu'est-ce qu'un diviseur commun ?

Prenons les nombres 18 et 24.

Les diviseurs de 18 sont :

1
2
3
6
9
18

Les diviseurs de 24 sont :

1
2
3
4
6
8
12
24

60 = 22 × 3 × 5

90 = 2 × 32 × 5
7 — Facteurs premiers communs

9 — Exemple complet

Calculons PGCD(72,48).

72 = 23 × 32

48 = 24 × 3

Les facteurs communs sont 2 et 3.

PGCD(72,48) = 23 × 3 = 24
✓ Résultat PGCD(72,48) = 24

1 — What is a common divisor?

Consider 18 and 24.

The divisors of 18 are:

1
2
3
6
9
18

The divisors of 24 are:

1
2
3
4
6
8
12
24

The numbers appearing in both lists are:

1
2
3
6
⭐ Common divisors 1, 2, 3 and 6 divide both numbers. They are called common divisors.
2 — Greatest Common Divisor

The common divisors of 18 and 24 are:

1, 2, 3, 6

The greatest one is 6.

GCD(18,24) = 6
⭐ Definition The Greatest Common Divisor of two natural numbers is the greatest number that divides both.
3 — First method: list the divisors

Find:

GCD(20,30)

Divisors of 20:

1
2
4
5
10
20

Divisors of 30:

1
2
3
5
6
10
15
30

Common divisors:

1
2
5
10
GCD(20,30) = 10
4 — The steps
1
List all divisors of the first number.
2
List the divisors of the second number and find the common ones.
3
Choose the greatest common divisor.
5 — Coprime numbers

Consider 8 and 15.

Their only common divisor is 1.

GCD(8,15) = 1
⭐ Definition If the GCD of two numbers is 1, the two numbers are called coprime.
6 — Using prime factorization

For larger numbers, listing every divisor can become long.

We can use prime factorization from Lesson 7.

60 = 22 × 3 × 5

90 = 2 × 32 × 5
7 — Find the common prime factors

The common prime factors are:

2
3
5

For each common factor, take the smaller exponent.

GCD(60,90) = 2 × 3 × 5 = 30
8 — Why the smaller exponent?
60 contains 22

90 contains 21

We cannot use 2² because 2² does not divide 90.

So we use 2¹.

⭐ Rule Keep only the common prime factors and use the smaller exponent of each.
9 — Full example

Find GCD(72,48).

72 = 23 × 32

48 = 24 × 3

The common factors are 2 and 3.

GCD(72,48) = 23 × 3 = 24
✓ Result GCD(72,48) = 24
